Cosy mystery keeps the puzzle and drops the dread. An amateur detective, a small community where everyone is a suspect, and violence that happens offstage. The pleasure is competence and gossip in roughly equal measure.
Where to start: Series reward reading in order, since the recurring cast is half the point. Look for a sleuth whose day job plausibly explains their access — bakers, booksellers and vicars are perennial for a reason.
