Contemporary romance is present-day, no magic system required. The obstacles are jobs, families, distance and the things people will not say — which makes the resolution feel earned rather than granted.

Where to start: Subgenre matters more than anything: small-town and sports romance run warm, romantic suspense adds a plot engine, and military romance tends to be the most emotionally heavy.
