Tense books keep the reader alert. A secret may be close to exposure, a killer may be watching, a competition may turn deadly, or a fragile alliance may fail at the worst possible moment. Suspense comes from knowing that something important could break, even when the exact threat remains hidden.

Where to start: Start with a psychological thriller for close, personal pressure; horror for dread; or dystopian fiction for danger built into the world itself. A tense fantasy adds political schemes, war, or supernatural risk without giving up the immersive setting.
